Saturday March 11, 9am - 10:15am class, 11:00am - 1:00pm rehearsal

SLO Library Community Room

$5 for LLCC members, $10 for non-members

Sandy Eastman is offering you an opportunity to attend his pre-concert class and the symphony dress rehearsal for a San Luis Obispo Symphony concert on March 11.

The San Luis Obispo Symphony offers as a gift to the community free dress rehearsals of its concerts during the morning (11am-1pm) preceding the evening of the performance.

There is a cost now to attend the Symphony rehearsals. At the PAC, adults must pay $15 and seniors (age 65 and older) must pay $10. The rehearsal is free to children. The tickets for the dress rehearsal will available about a week before the performance at the PAC box office or by calling them at (805) 7564849.

The March 11 program:

Wagner: Overture Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg

Mendelssohn: Concerto for Violin with Timothy Chooi

Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98

David Handel, Conductor

Timothy Chooi, Violin Virtuoso

Working on a theme of great German master composers, the Symphony welcomes Maestro David Handel. The evening begins with Wagners overture Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, written as part of the musical opera that told the story of the Master Singers (i.e. musical craftsman) of the era.

Performing Mendelssohns Violin Concerto is Canadian virtuoso Timothy Chooi. One of Mendelssohns last, large orchestral works, the piece is one of the most popular and frequently performed violin concertos of all time.

To cap the evening, the Symphony will perform Brahmss Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98. Considered one of the greatest composers in history and grouped as one of the Three Bs (Bach and Beethoven the others),

Timothy Chooi has been described as the miracle (Montreal Lapresse). Recently winning the Bronze Medal Winner of the 2015 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Timothy also recently completed an extensive recital tour with Jeunesses Musicales Canada, performed with Pinchas Zukerman and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, recorded his debut album, and was featured at Ravinia Festival in Chicago. He is also a winner of the 2013 Vadim Repin International Scholarship, a recipient of the 2015 Sylva Gelber Award and Grand Prize Winner of the 2010 Montreal Symphony Manulife Competition.

This course will be in two parts.  In the early morning, there will be a lecture about the composers, about the pieces that will be played in the rehearsal, and about the soloist.  In the late morning, the class, as a group, will attend the dress rehearsal of the performance in the Christopher Coan Center at the PAC at Cal Poly.  At the dress rehearsal the SLO Symphony conductor will speak as he conducts, giving background information, musicology, and notes on harmony.  With the conductor's broad knowledge and stage presence, the dress rehearsals are fairly comprehensive.

Silsby Eastman (Sandy) grew up and spent his working life in the Los Angeles area before moving to Pismo Beach.  He has taught at Cuesta and Allan Hancock Colleges and has been playing bassoon, baritone saxophone, and bridge as often as possible.  After graduating from Occidental College and Indiana University, he studied conducting bassoon with Walter Ritchie and conducting with Lauris Jones and Richard Lert.  He served as a bandsman in the Air Force and taught in San Bernardino, La Canada, Paramount and Agoura Hills.  He is also a former member of the Long Beach Coterie Sinfonique, the Pasadena Community Orchestra and the Topanga Symphony.
