(re)emergent theatre presents GETTING CLOSE
(re)emergent theatre is excited to premiere, Getting Close, an original storytelling cycle created and performed by an ensemble of formerly incarcerated individuals. Directed by Clare Hammoor and devised by the ensemble, the production runs March 3-5 at El Barrio's Artspace PS109. Tickets are on sale now.
Since its founding over a year ago, (re)emergent theatre has been collaborating with nearly a dozen formerly incarcerated folks to develop a community rooted in artistry, compassion and collaboration. Throughout the course of this year, members of the ensemble have decided to create a play to share with the wider community as a means of spreading awareness, building empathy, and taking action to help those to are both incarcerated and returning home. Getting Close is a play of stories based on our members' lived experiences behind the walls. It's a web of trauma, loss, resilience, courage, doubt and connection that draws its strength from each storyteller and their stories. Each performance includes a 20-minute talkback with the ensemble and creative team in discussion with audience members about process as well as next steps for the work inside the theatre and in the streets.
Getting Close is directed by Clare Hammoor. The script was written by the ensemble with Co-Writer, Caits Meissner. The ensemble features Juan Carlos "Johnny" Hincapie, Robert Pollock, Juan Broadway Rodriguez, Akeel Adil and Robert Lindsay. The production is stage managed by Isabella Batts. (re)emergent theatres Managing Director is Ashley Hamilton.
