Why attend the Yakima Enological Societys Platinum Dinner

Wine Press Northwest magazine has been conducting the Platinum Judging for 17 years. This judging is open to any Pacific Northwest wine that won a Gold medal at one of the 35 accredited wine competitions in the previous year.  This year 530 wines were entered into the competition and only 44 were awarded a Double Platinum. Being awarded a Double Platinum means that all the judges in the panel awarded that wine a Platinum award.
Dan Berger, a nationally renowned wine writer and judge who lives in Santa Rosa, California has been on the Platinum judging panel for more than 10 years and had some interesting comments in The Wine Press Northwest magazine about the Platinum Wine competition.  I will try to summarize his comments. Many wine drinkers know what they like in a Chardonnay or a Cabernet and no Platinum award will change their mind, they will buy what they like, But for those lesser known wines like Siegerrebe, Grenache, Gamay, Petite Sirah, it can be very helpful to read the tasting notes on one of these lesser known wines that the judges awarded a Platinum. You will know that this particular wine is considered a great example of that variety and has balance which is one of the key components of great wines. Style is another very important aspect of the wine. Is this wine befitting the grape variety? Does the wine exhibit the fruit character of that grape? Many drinkable wines taste good but the style does not fit the variety. Some professional tasters often refer to this wine as UOTC unclear on the concept Attending our Platinum dinner and having the chance to taste 20 Platinum wines and hear the comments of the judges and attending winemakers. They may well introduce you to some new wines that you really like instead of the same old ones you usually purchase.
Another reason to attend this dinner is to support the wine industry, wineries and winemakers of the Pacific Northwest. This event is a fund raiser and all monies made from this event go to scholarships for students studying Enology and Viticulture in the schools and universities of the Pacific Northwest. Over the past several years of the Yakima Enology Society sponsoring this dinner, we have raised and given to these schools over $52,000 for scholarships to deserving students, many from the Yakima Valley.
This year the Fifteenth Annual Platinum Dinner will be held Saturday April 8th at 6:00 PM the Yakima Country Club. In past years the event was often somewhat crowded due to the number of attendees, this year we will have plenty of room as the Yakima Country Club has completed its remodeling and expansion and has added several new rooms. If you have not been to the Yakima Country Club recently you will be surprised. So talk to your friends and put a group together and support this wine industry of ours and the winemakers of the future.  I have attached a registration form for the event, which can be mailed in with your check. You can also pay using your credit card by going to BrownPaperTickets.com, click on  search events and enter the number 2840660.
I assure you that you will be educated and entertained and you may well be surprised.
