Leonard Norman Cohen(September 21, 1934 - November 7, 2016) was a Canadian singer, songwriter, musician, poet, novelist and painter. Cohen was inducted into both theCanadian Music Hall of Fameand theCanadian Songwriters Hall of Fame,as well as theRock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was a Companion of theOrder of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honor. In 2011, Cohen received thePrince of Asturias Awardfor literature and the ninthGlenn Gould Prize.

Leonard Cohen was a novelist who abandoned a promising literary career to become one of the foremost songwriters of the contemporary era. Throughout a musical career that spanned nearly five decades, Mr. Cohen wrote songs that addressed  in spare language that could be both oblique and telling  themes of love and faith, despair and exaltation, solitude and connection, war and politics. More than 2,000 recordings of his songs have been made, initially by the folk-pop singers who were his first champions, like Judy Collins and Tim Hardin, and later by performers from across the spectrum of popular music, among them U2, Aretha Franklin, R.E.M., Jeff Buckley, Trisha Yearwood and Elton John.

This is the most challenging activity that humans get into, which is love. You know, we have the sense that we cannot live without love, that life has very little meaning without it. Cohen, from a 2009 interview with the Guardian.

Jeremy Wilson Foundation
Founded in 2010, this foundation is a musiciansnonprofit health and services organization supported by friends, family and fans. The foundation makes it easy to assist individual musicians and their families during medical emergencies. There is a dearth of relief organizations for working musicians who are at high risk of serious financial harm during a medical crisis. Many artists simply cannot afford basic health insurance; they are self-employed and do not receive employee benefits and aretwice as likely as the general public to be uninsured.*

Whether skewering former lovers, or rebuffing the Devils advances, Amanda holds nothing back. Someday you might have some clout / When your teeth turn yellow and your hair falls out, she sings on Lame Tattoos. But therell be some things youll never lose / Like your battle scars and your lame tattoos. On opening track, Fresh Kill, she sings, Ill lick the salty tears right off your face / Its a bitter sadness, but Ive come to like the taste.Tough Ones to Lovealso includes a beautiful rendition of the Magnetic Fields song, Two Characters in Search of a Country Song, and Johnny Dowds badman ballad, First There Was, with Steve Moore taking over lead vocals. Paying homage to Amandas famous lineage,Tough Ones to Loveincludes Terry Gilkysons classic, Cry of the Wild Goose, previously recorded by Amandas grandfather, Rusty Richards, a long-time member of the Sons of the Pioneers.Rooted in the country tradition, but not confined to it,Tough Ones to Loveranges from country-soul to gritty roots-rock, all guided by Amandas smoky, commanding voice.
