Growing Food for Beginners
Eager to grow your own food, but not sure where to start?!  We've got you covered with this in-depth, hands-on beginning gardening workshop series.  Growing your own food can be extremely rewarding AND save you money.  Even if you just have a small space for a few containers, or a backyard free to grow whatever you'd like, we can teach you the basics of growing food crops that do well here in the Bay Area.  Topics covered include:  site selection, sowing seeds & transplanting, soil and composting, garden maintenance and harvesting, beneficial and pest insects, backyard animals, and preserving your bountiful harvest.  Join us for just one class ($30), or sign up for the entire 6-class series ($165) for optimal veggie gardening success!

Classes will take place on the 4th Saturday of each month, starting in March, from 1-4pm.  Classes will be held in either El Sobrante or Richmond at the instructors home gardens (locations will be emailed to students after signing up).  Each 3 hour class will combine lecture and hands-on activities so you can get your hands dirty and really get the experience you need to start your own vegetable garden.  Each class is $30, or $165 if you sign up for the entire 6-class series.  We look forward to sharing our years of knowledge and experience so you too can enjoy sun-ripened tomatoes, vibrant greens, and abundant herbs all year long.

Instructor Bios:
Lisa Lackey (left) has been gardening for 20+ years.  She has a Permaculture Design Certificate from the Regenerative Design Institute, a Masters degree in Pest Management from UC Riverside and Bachelors in Biology from Southern Oregon.  She has been working for various watershed based non-profits including Fish Friendly Farming.  Lately she has been volunteering for the Native Here Nursery (a nursery growing only locally native plants), the UCB Urban Bee Garden (a garden focusing on supporting native bees) and two local farms in El Sobrante. Additionally, she is working on developing her own yard into a food forest, for humans, pollinators, and wildlife.

Jaime Pawelek (right) has been growing vegetables in some form or another for almost her whole life.   She has fruit trees and vegetable beds in her backyard and preserves her harvest by canning, making jams/jellies, drying, and fermenting.  Her front yard is a pollinator oasis with mostly CA native plants and is starting to incorporate medicinal herbs from her herbal medicine studies.  Jaime worked for over 6 years researching native bees in the Urban Bee Lab at UC Berkeley after she received her B.S. in Conservation and Resource Studies.  Jaime still works with bees by designing bee-friendly habitat gardens with her business, Wild Bee Garden Design.  For the past 3 years she has worked on a farm in Mill Valley growing vegetables, fruits, herbs, and cut flowers.

Lisa and Jaime are also very active members of the Richmond Garden club and have hosted and taught classes at their homes for the club.
