Jeryl Cunningham-Fleming, Soprano & Gary Mitchell, Jr., Collaborative Pianist
The National Opera Center in New York presents an elite array of today's leading vocal artists. On Monday, January 23, soprano Jeryl Cunningham-Fleming will offer an exclusive performance of selections from her new album, Stand the Storm. Released in July 2016, the collection of sixteen songs and spirituals of faith and hope is a reflection of Cunningham-Fleming's mission to preserve and promote the music that has shaped her life and her career.
Ms. Cunningham-Fleming's repertoire encompasses opera, oratorio, choral masterworks, jazz, and art song. But, interpretation of the African American spiritual is a high point of her artistry, drawing on her rich heritage. This recital gives prominence to that art form and features four new arrangements. Noted composer Tim Amukele's work is specially represented with his recent arrangements of Stand the Storm, A Diligent and Grateful Heart, and More Love to Thee. And, Gale Jones Murphy's Oh, What a Beautiful City takes center stage on the album as well as this recital.
Dr. Everett McCorvey, producer of the new album, founder and music director of the American Spiritual Ensemble, is a champion of Jeryls artistry, asserting: Jeryl is one of the true vocal artists of this generation. Her silvery soprano voice floats with great ease throughout all of the registers. Every song on her new recording is a master class in vocal technique, legato singing, and skillful vocalism. Her album was a joy to produce and a joy to experience.
Ms. Cunningham-Fleming is presented in the Rehearsal Hall of the National Opera Center courtesy of the American Spiritual Ensemble. Pianist Gary Mitchell, Jr. will be her musical collaborator. The National Opera Center is located in Midtown Manhattan at 330 Seventh Avenue, between 28th and 29th Streets.
