January 2017 Dinner Event: Dig Safely - Avoid Costly Dig-Ins
Dig Safely - Avoid Costly Dig-Ins Presented by Aaron Lindh Lead Damage Investigator, DiRT Unit, PG&E
Dig-ins underground gas or electric lines accidentally struck during construction projects. In 2015, PG&E experienced over 1,711 dig-ins to their subsurface facilities; which equates to approximately 5 hits per day. Primary causes include ignorance of the laws pertaining to excavations, and use of power equipment within proximity of subsurface installations. The philosophy of the DiRT Unit is to build relationships and partnerships with all persons involved in underground excavation, specifically California licensed contractors who are required to follow excavation Government Code 4216.
Dig Safely objectives: * Understand the laws governing digging * Know the Call 811 Before You Dig process * Current efforts that focus on changing contractor behaviors and enhancing pipeline safety.
