GlobeMed at University of Cincinnati 4th Annual Benefit Dinner
GlobeMed at University of Cincinnati is a chapter of a national organization which seeks to promote health equity and social justice.  GlobeMed is an organization founded by college students and run by college students, and recognizes the importance of partnering with grassroots organizations to outline the needs of a community.  Social Action for Women (SAW), the partner organization of this chapter, is located in Mae Sot, Thailand, near the Thai-Burma border.  SAW serves the needs of Burmese migrants, who often cross the border seeking work or to escape political unrest.  GlobeMed at UC funds the Community Health Outreach Project (CHOP).  Through CHOP, SAW works with its communities to identify their needs, including women's health, personal hygiene and preventative medicine, and community engagement.  SAW trains peer educators within the migrant communities, who return to their communities to educate their peers and serve as a resource and point of contact within their communities.

The annual benefit dinner is a space to bring together local professionals, educators, and other supporters of GlobeMed's initiative.  It is an opportunity to learn about GlobeMed as a national, and global, organization, and specifically about the Univerity of Cincinnati chapter.  This year, we will be featuring a keynote speaker, Dr. Christine O'Dea.

Christine ODea, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  She is a graduate of the University of Dayton, Mayo Medical School, and the University of Cincinnati Family Medicine Residency program.  After spending five years in rural family medicine practice in Northern Wisconsin, she moved with her family and small children to rural Honduras, where she spent two years as a volunteer family physician with the non-governmental organization, Shoulder to Shoulder.  She returned from Honduras to join the faculty at the University of Cincinnati, where she is the Director of Global Health Education in The Christ Hospital/University of Cincinnati Family Medicine Residency Program.  In addition, she is the medical director at Crossroad Health Center.  She is also a member of the Latino Health Collaborative and course director for the Medical Spanish/Latino Health Elective in the College of Medicine.    Her areas of interests include Global and Underserved Health and Latino Health.

This year, the benefit dinner will be hosted on March 3rd at The Phoenix (812 Race St, Cincinnati, OH 45202), from 6:30-9:30 PM.  Ticket cost admission, open bar, and dinner.  A silent auction will be conducted with a variety of baskets and other items.
