DARK FORTUNE (Finsteres Glück)

Sun., Feb. 5, 2017  12:30 pm
Castro Theatre, San Francisco

North America Premiere

114 mins. Switzerland (2016). DCP Projection. Swiss-German with English subtitles.

Dark Fortune director Stefan Haupt, (Berlin & Beyond alum: What About Love, The Circle) opens up a spectrum of emotion in his sensitive new feature. A family vacation to Alsace. A country drive during a solar eclipse. And in an instant, a childs world is destroyed. Eight-year old Yves (newcomer Noé Ricklin) is the sole survivor of a highway accident that kills his entire family. In a hospital back in Zürich, Yves lapses into a profoundly troubled state: he can neither grieve nor acknowledge his own pain. Child psychologist Eliane (Eleni Haupt, the directors wife), a veteran clinician, refuses to weep over the broken boy: she gives him space, time, care, and company. Though Eliane has family problems of her ownher teenage daughters are constantly at odds with each other and with herthe question of Yves grows ever larger in her life. As Eliane becomes the closest thing Yves has to a friend, a parent, or an assurance that life goes on, she  tentatively and temporarily brings him into her own family. But when Yves aunt and grandmother close in, Eliane cannot shake the feeling that they do not have Yves best interests at heartand that the wreck that orphaned him might not have been an accident. Sharply photographed in crisp, autumnal  colors by Tobias Dengler, Dark Fortune is shot through with a quiet mystery and awe at the darkness in our hearts and soulsand the light that can eclipse it.
