A Piece of My Heart
The Costa Mesa Playhouse presents impressionistic drama A Piece of My Heart by Shirley Lauro, the true stories of women who served in Vietnam, playing February 3 through 26, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm.
Suggested by the book by Keith Walker which told the stories of 26 women who served in Vietnam, the play distills those women down to 6 composite characters -- four nurses, a Red Cross worker and a country western singer, and follows them from young idealists unprepared for the horrors of war, through their lifelong struggles to come to term with their experiences. Named "The most enduring play on Vietnam," by The Vietnam Vets Association, A Piece of My Heart is told with the music and soul of a tumultuous era in American history.
"There have been a number of plays dealing with Viet Nam, but none with the direct, emotional impact of Ms. Lauro's work."- N.Y. Times
A Piece of My Heart is directed by Kathy Paladino. The six women are played by Shannon Dodson, Caitlin Ion, Hannah JeyaRajah, Katie May Porter, Kim Sava and Angela Watson, with Hans Kelsen as all the male characters and Susan Rohrer as a musician who punctuates the impressionistic play with songs of the time.
