Event
February 1: Amy X Neuburg, IMA, Valerie Kuehne and the Wasps Nests at Starline Social Club
An evening of experimental chamber intensity: three music acts with a dynamic mix of vocals, percussion, and electronics. Doors open at 7:30pm.
8pm: Through restraint and release, electro-percussion duo IMA (Amma Ateria and Nava Dunkelman) explores distortions of time with their array of metallic nature. Their sound marches forth with space-expanding densities to brinks of breakage, situated to be caressed by beautification in between. IMA have performed and collaborated with avant-garde pioneers John Zorn, Fred Frith, Ikue Mori and many others. http://www.ammaateria.com/ima
9pm: Valerie Kuehne and the Wasps Nests (NYC/Pittsburgh) features Valerie on cello and vocals, Jeffrey Young on violin, and Alex Cohen on drums. They play a mix of grindcore, cabaret, performance art, punk, and neoclassical art song, with a dash of free improvisation. Lucid Culture said Valerie Kuehne is "part punk classical cellist, part performance artist, but her performance art isn't the foofy, mannered kind - it's oldschool 80s style and it has fangs. And it's hilarious." Her work operates under principles of surprise and investigates obsession, comedy, decay, forensic pathology, sex, hypnogogia, viscera, spirituality, and death. https://www.facebook.com/waspsnestswaspsnests
10pm: Amy X Neuburg is known throughout the creative music scene for her irreverently genre-crossing avant-cabaret performances - featuring live looping and electronic percussion, and sung with offbeat lyrics (at once comedic and exceptionally poignant) using every part of her 4-octave range. She has performed at such diverse venues as the Other Minds and Bang on a Can experimental music festivals, the Berlin International Poetry Festival, the Wellington and Christchurch Jazz Festivals (New Zealand), the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, colleges, clubs and concert halls throughout the U.S. and abroad. "A one-woman musical hurricane." Otago Times, NZ http://www.amyxneuburg.com
