Robeson and Dunham: Art and Activism 101
This exhilarating multimedia showcase highlights the lives and gifts of Katherine Dunham and Paul Robeson. A truly original theatrical experience for Black History month 2017 created and produced by four collaborating independent artists committed to the presentation of progressive political theater. Our creative team includes Chiquita Camille (Katherine Dunham), Julius Hollingsworth (Paul Robeson), Robert Gonzalez (stage manger), and Rico Speight (producer/director/writer). We have worked together before on two previous Off Broadway productions, and in this campaign, we have decided to take destiny into our own hands and do something crazy (in a good way)! In this campaign we are reaching out to family, friends and comrades for support to make this idea come alive. We have a great location, the Gene Frankel Theatre (GFT) in New Yorks East Village, which has a history of political theatrical performances. Established in 1949 by actor/director Gene Frankel, the GFT is renowned for its presentation of Jean Genet's The Blacks in 1961 starring James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson.
