This year's festival will take you on a musical journey that will go from jarocho fandango to mariachi fiesta and will feature the Grammy winning Mariachi Divas-they were nominated for a 9th Grammy in 2017!, Mariachi Las Alteñas from San Antonio, Texas and Mexico's female jarocho ensemble Caña Dulce y Caña Brava!
Mariachi favorites such as La Bamba and El Cascabel are songs native to Veracruz, Mexico where they are performed in a lively and danceable style know as the son Jarocho. Feel your heart beat with excitement as this years festival opens with traditional interpretations of these and other regional classics by Mexico's female Jarocho ensemble Caña Dulce y Caña Brava. Las Alteñas, the finest all-female mariachi group in San Antonio, Texas will follow and the two-time Grammy-winning Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea from Los Angeles will headline with a musical tribute to the state of Veracruz, Mexico. They will also perform your favorite mariachi songs.
MARIACHI DIVAS de CINDY SHEA Californias Two-time Grammy Recipients
Directed and founded in 1999 by trumpet player Cindy Shea, the all-female Mariachi Divas continue to lead the way in the mariachi genre. A two-time Grammy Award winner, with a total of seven Grammy nominations and two Latin Grammy nominations, the Mariachi Divas are a multicultural, all-female ensemble imbued with the unique musical flavor of Los Angeles. The Divas discography includes 10 albums released through Shea Records and East Side Records. They were just nominated for a 9th Grammy and positioned for a possible win in 2017! CONGRATULATIONS DIVAS!
MARIACHI LAS ALTEÑAS Texas' Finest All-Female Mariachi
Considered Texas finest all female mariachi, Las Alteñas has been captivating audiences throughout the United States since 2002. These 10 remarkably talented women are brought together by their passion to perform and promote the mariachi tradition. Known for their exceptional stage presence, musical performances and strong harmonious vocals, Mariachi Las Alteñas appeals to audiences of all generations and heritages. Under the direction of Valerie Vargas, they have opened for well-known groups such as Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan and performed along side Mariachi Sol de Mexico. Las Alteñas have also won first place for Best Mariachi at the Go Tejano Mariachi Invitational in Houston, TX before a crowd of over 67,000 fans. In a predominantly male industry, this all female mariachi has made its mark.
CAÑA DULCE Y CAÑA BRAVA a female jarocho ensemble from Veracruz, Mexico
Adriana Cao Romero and Raquel Palacios Vega were both born in Veracruz, Mexico and currently live in Mexico City. They founded Caña Dulce y Caña Blanca in 2008 with the intent to preserve and diffuse traditional jarocho music throughout the world despite that this music is a traditionally male performance genre. Adriana Cao Romero is the groups skilled harpist and is well known among jarocho musicians. Prior to forming her own group, she was a member of other well-known jarocho groups such as Zacamandú, Chuchumbé and collaborated with renowned masters of the Veracruz son such as El Negro Ojeda, Don Arcadio Hidalgo and Antonio Gracía de León. Raquel Palacios Vega plays the jarana, a stringed instrument that looks like a small guitar, and is a vocalist and dancer. She descends from a long lineage of male jarana masters including El Güero Vega.
OTHER SPECIAL GUESTS will include: Cindy and Libby Harding "Las Hermanas Jardin" playing Jarocho music.
Arrive early at 5:00pm and enjoy food, drink and a pre-concert performance by MARIACHI FEMENIL HERENCIA a community-based all-female group from Corona California composed of young girls who are as young as 8 years old. Also performing will be MARIACHI LAS PALOMITAS from the LA Harmony Project, the women and girls from the MARIACHI CONSERVATORY in Boyle Heights, Ballet Folklorico Raices Mexicanas and the children of Ballet Folklorico de Los Angeles. It will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm in front of the beautiful fountain at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. This will happen all before the ticketed event that starts at 7:30pm.
FOOD, SNACKS, DRINKS and BEER/WINE will be for sale starting at 5:00pm to 10:00pm.
