The LAVC Valley Department of Theater Arts presents the bluegrass musical THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM March 23-26 in the Horseshoe Theater; evening performances are at 8pm Thursday through Saturday and matinees at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets purchased here on brownpapertickets.com are $15.00 and will cost $20.00 if purchased at the door.

An irreverent, jubilant musical comedy based on the short story by Eudora Welty, The Robber Bridegroom is the Southern-fried Robin Hood tale of Jamie Lockhart, a dangerous, handsome, backwoods rogue who is a gentleman by day and bandit by night. When he falls for Rosamund, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy planter, his world is turned upside down. Throw in an evil stepmother intent on Rosamund's demise, her pea-brained henchman and a hostile talking head-in-a-trunk, and you have a rollicking, foot-stomping country romp.

This rousing, bawdy Southern fairytale has a book and lyrics by Alfred Uhry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Driving Miss Daisy. The score, by Robert Waldman, is one of the only genuine bluegrass scores ever heard in a Broadway musical. Since opening on Broadway in 1975, The Robber Bridegroom has gone on to become a regional favorite and was recently seen in an acclaimed off-Broadway revival.

Directed by LAVC professor Cathy Susan Pyles with scenery and lighting designed by LAVC chairperson Jennifer Read and costumes designed by LAVC staff costumer Mary Reilly.
