Dan Crary, Bill Evans and Martin Stevens
Dan Crary is a legend in the development of the flatpick lead guitar in acoustic American music. Following the footsteps of Doc Watson and Clarence White, in the 1960s and 70s, Dan pursued the development of an approach to the steel string, flat-top guitar that explored new dimensions, transforming what had always been an instrument of accompaniment into one with a leading role, capable of fluent, expressive melodies and a variety of textures. In his travels around the United States, Crary learned and integrated traditional American styles and tunes, transforming them into strongly personal and creative works that are at once deeply rooted and freshly new.
A long and distinguished recording career, featuring solo projects and group efforts (especially with the award-winning ensemble California, active through most of the 1990s) plus many guest appearances, have brought Dan Crary acclaim as a versatile performer able to range from Mozart to Anglo-American fiddle tunes to moody, evocative original compositions. Nineteen ninety-fours Jammed If I Do, with guests Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Norman Blake, and Beppe Gambetta, was hailed as one of the decades great gatherings of guitarists, while is 1992 solo album, Thunderation, won the National Association of Independent Record Distributors and Manufacturers annual Indie award for Best String Instrumental Album. Crarys 1997 release, Holiday Guitar, won 1998?s Indie for Best Seasonal Music from the Association For Independent Music.
SF Bay Area banjoist Bill Evans is an internationally known five-string banjo life force. As a performer, teacher, writer, scholar and composer, he brings a deep knowledge, intense virtuosity and contagious passion to all things banjo, with thousands of music fans and banjo students from all over the world in a career that spans over thirty-five years. The author of Banjo For Dummies, Bill has performed or recorded with David Grisman, David Bromberg, Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard, Peter Rowan, Dry Branch Fire Squad, J. D. Crowe, Tony Trischka, Alan Munde, and Jody Stecher, among many others.
His recent CD In Good Company, featuring twenty-six guest artists including the Infamous Stringdusters and Tim OBrien, topped both bluegrass and folk charts and was named to many Best of lists. In recent years, Bill has toured the Pacific Northwest with his solo show The Banjo in America and with banjo icon Alan Munde.
Portland-based mandolin player and fiddler Martin Stevens has been a part of the Northwest Bluegrass and Contest Fiddle scene since the age of six! A multiple winner of the Washington State Fiddle Contest, Martin has performed in the Bluegrass Regulators, Athen and the Rivercity Boys. His work graces Dans most recent release Perfect Storm. Whether hes flawlessly performing a traditional bluegrass instrumental or lending tasty licks to a contemporary piece, Martins playing is always on the mark with heaping doses of the three Ts of fine musicianship: timing, tone and taste.
As a trio, Dan Crary, Bill Evans and Martin Stevens will perform pieces from Dan and Bills many recordings along with their re-workings of traditional bluegrass favorites and songs from contemporary writers.
