Mouths of Babes
About Mouths of Babes

"If I was forced to categorize it, I'd call it modern folk. It's powerful. It's romantic. It's giddy. And the two are insanely infectious together onstage, like a musical and a personal love fest all at once." - Huffington Post

With more than a dozen albums and over a thousand shows between them, Ty Greenstein and Ingrid Elizabeth of Mouths of Babes are no strangers to the contemporary folk music scene. For years, their respective bands Girlyman and Coyote Grace captivated thousands of loyal fans as they criss-crossed the country, rocked festival main stages, and toured with the likes of the Indigo Girls and Dar Williams. Now, as Mouths of Babes, Ty and Ingrid have distilled the very best of the songwriting, humor, and musicianship of their previous groups into a new power duo that brings more style and depth than ever before.

Mouths of Babes burst onto the acoustic music scene in 2014 with big shoes to fill, and on their debut EP Faith & Fumes they delivered with songs that are equal parts celebration and blues, folk and soul, tear-jerker ballad and irreverent ditty. In just over a year, the duo has become a sought-after act in its own right, headlining some of the best rooms on the circuit, such as the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, Evanston SPACE in Chicago, and Club Passim in Boston. Mouths of Babes is slated to go back into the studio in 2016 to record its highly anticipated first full-length CD. As a testament to MoB's fan power, the Kickstarter for the new album was wildly successful, drawing almost 800 backers and raising over $55,000 in 30 days.

The key to the Mouths of Babes magic is in the contrast. Rarely is a sound or a show as balanced as it is with these two, and the differences in both their songwriting styles and personal presentation makes for an unusually satisfying yin and yang. The Chicago Tribune writes, They offer unique counterpoints to one anotherthe laidback Ty, nattily dressed in a tie and crisp suit jacket, has a rich, lovely alto. Ingrid, clad in a sultry pink satin mini-dress, is a sassy chanteuse with a lilting soprano. Trading jokes and sharing elegant harmonies, the two women display an intuitive professional bond. They easily switch off lead vocals and play a wide array of instruments, with Ty on acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, and foot percussion, and Ingrid playing upright bass, ukulele, and cajon.

Ty makes a quiet impression as a gifted lyricist, talented multi-instrumentalist, and magnetic presence onstage. Relix Magazine writes, The poignant honesty that Ty brings to [;her]; tunes gives them an emotional intensity thats as bracing as it is moving, while the Americana Gazette praises her powerful lyrics: Tys practice of extending metaphors out toward a precipice keeps an unpredictable edge to [;her]; songs. Most writers would stop at the easy close. Ty jumps, leaving much to the imagination, to powerful effect.

Ingrid, a natural performer, easily commands audiences with her larger-than-life sassiness and professional dancer's grace. Curve Magazine writes, The fiery redheaded bassist [;Ingrid Elizabeth]; is the unabashed, unapologetic woman who isn't afraid to yell it all from the rooftops, and the Indigo Girls Amy Ray once marveled that she found herself enraptured and taken by [;her]; timelessness of song.

Both entertainers come from notable musical families, and their influences (namely, 60s folk music and Motown) are deeply embedded in Mouths of Babes sound. Tys father, Ron Greenstein, is a member of the legendary folk harmony trio The Chad Mitchell Trio (where John Denver got his start), while Ingrids uncle Tom Eyen wrote the world-famous, Tony-winning musical Dreamgirls. MTV.com notes that the apple hasnt fallen far from the tree: The songs Mouths of Babes writes and performs together fuse blues, folk, and soul, and the depth of emotion found in their lyrics is reminiscent of all thats moving about the Dreamgirls soundtrack.

Fans have quickly fallen in love with Mouths of Babes realness and humor as much as with their music. At live shows, audience members snort with laughter, cry into their dates shoulder, and make confessions at the merch table. Ty and Ingrid are quick-witted, sincere, and accessible on social media, sharing photos of their daily life and posting videos of brand new songs recorded live from the dashboard of their Jetta TDI Sportwagen. Theyre also dedicated activists, making a practice of donating 5% of their ticket sales to worthy social justice and environmental causes.

Ty Greenstein and Ingrid Elizabeth have an absolutely mesmerizing kismet together, and are both accomplished musicians [;with]; versatile, fun-loving, moving, accessible and simply beautiful songwriting. Go see this band  and prepare to fall in love!  North End Concert Series
