Join us for a night of celebration of the worlds most renowned political prisoner as we launch Mumias new and expanded edition of We Want Freedom. Mumia Abu-Jamal was only fourteen when he helped found the Philadelphia branch of the Black Panther Party, where he began his writing career as Lieutenant Minister of Information for the Philadelphia branch and for the Partys national newspaper.
We Want Freedom: A Life in the Black Panther Party is poetic and critical account of day-to-day life in the Party alongside a rigorous analysis of the centuries-long tradition of Black resistance and liberation. Mumia writes, the Black Panther Party located their message in a strong organiƓation, a clear critique of the existing structure, and a demand for change. It is my hope that Black Lives Matter, which has the luxury of looking at the history Black Panther Party, will continue to develop their critique and program.
Mumia unearths the roots of todays struggles as he examines the long history of resistance to slavery, racial politics in US, the FBIs subversion of justice through COINTELPRO and earlier operations, and the Panthers demand for the immediate end to police brutality and the murder of Black people.
December 9, 2016 marks thirty five years since the police tried to execute Mumia in 1981 on the streets of Philadelphia after which he was framed and sentenced to death through the complicity of the FBI, the District Attorney's Office and the courts.
After a night of celebration and critical education, we will meet in Philly the next day to rally in the streets as part of a renewed campaign to free Mumia Abu-Jamal and to demand his freedom and freedom for all political prisoners. Mumia faces deteriorating health with his untreated hepatitis C infection and a further risk from the black, oily water being piped into SCI Mahanoyunfit to drink, unfit to bathe in. Prisoners are given three small cups of water at each meal and no clean water to bathe in. These tactics amount to death by neglect.
The rally will be followed by a program to develop our strategy and next steps to get Mumia cured with the life-saving drugs he needs and to get him free, through a court challenge based on the recent Supreme Court ruling in Williams v. Pennsylvania.
