Trinity Elms Health & Rehab, a skilled-nursing facility in Clemmons, is hosting a one-day conference on outreach, welcome, and accessibility for individuals with physical, mental, and emotional challenges in congregations. Attendees will learn about outreach and participation with an overlooked group. Faith leaders, parish nurses, counselors, and therapists will hear from speakers addressing living with autism, cerebral palsy, HIV, anxiety and other issues that might present barriers to participation in the church, synagogue and mosque.
The conference, titled Open Hearts, Open Doors: Access Across the Spectrum of Abilities in the Faith Community, takes place on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the facility, 7449 Fair Oaks Dr., Clemmons. Registration fee of $25 includes breakfast and lunch, snacks and materials. Participants will receive 6 hours of continuing education credits. Seating is limited to the first 50 registrants.
Keynote speaker is Shannon Dingle, who holds a master's degree in education, specializing in autism. Other speakers include Andy Hagler, the director of the Mental Health Association in the Triad; and Kim Shufran, founding director of iCan House, a safe space for individuals on the neurodiversity spectrum.
The day begins with breakfast at 7:30 followed by morning sessions with our keynoter and other speakers. After lunch on-site, the afternoon will include breakout sessions, a panel discussion, and a reception for informal conversation. The panel discussion will focus on listening to neurodiverse individuals and families.
The focus is on welcome, outreach, and listening to individuals and families whose physical, mental, and emotional challenges can get in the way of their full participation in their faith communities. The goal is to hear from these individuals and those who walk with them, learning to become more open.
Faith community leaders whose congregations welcome visitors will hear about an often-overlooked group whose individuals have potential to bring many gifts to the congregation. Those who attend will take away insight into living with challenges and learn why, for many visitors, "all are welcome" does not always translate to a truly welcoming community.
