Don't Be Absurd! An Evening of Absurd Theater
Join us for an evening of absurd theater! Wacky, wild, nonsensical and featuring lots of monkeys! With a common theme of communication, or lack thereof, our evening is funny, topical, and thought provoking. Do not operate heavy machinery while watching our show. Featuring work by renowned absurdists Eugene Ionesco and David Ives, and -- in a Northwest School first -- two commissioned plays by Seattle playwrights Dan Tarker and Heidi Heimarck. Words Words Words by David Ives ponders the "Infinite Monkey Theorem," the notion that if given enough time a room full of typewriters and chimpanzees could eventually produce the complete text of Hamlet. The Girls by Heidi Heimarck is set in a monkey penal colony, where monkeys dance to Girl from Ipanema and wonder about conformity and expectations in a brave new world. From the playwright: "The monkettes in The Girls are lost in a world where they must learn the dance, and they reflect the difficulty that young women face in trying to find their own unique voices." The Great Leader by Dan Tarker finds disgruntled citizens outside a cafe, wondering about Twinkies, arts funding for mimes, impending shortages, and if you had a choice-how would you build a leader? From the playwright: "In this homage to Eugene Ionesco, a community of people in the midst of a leadership shortage try to help a local artist sculpt an ideal leader, but not everyone shares the same ideas about leadership." The Bald Soprano by Eugene Ionesco is our final play. Start with a proper English couple who welcome their proper English guests, add one reprobate maid and a visit from the fire chief, sprinkle in absurd language, then sit back and enjoy the ride.
