Citizen Journalism: What Makes a Good Story?
The International Examiner is teaming up with 21 Progress and industry expert Matt Chan to present a workshop series on citizen journalism.

"What Makes a Good Story?"is the second workshop in this series, and will focus on storytelling methodology and your rights when it comes to media. We are excited to welcome Screaming Flea Productions founder Matt Chan, as well as renowned media lawyer Stacey Walters, to co-present this workshop.

---

Workshop Description:

These days, it's easy to create and share videos. With social media and free video streaming sites, we can share our stories, opinions, and voices with more people than we ever could before.

But, making a video that has an effective, clear message is challenging. Ease of delivery does not remove the importance of good storytelling practices. Knowing this, how does one build a story that is coherent, engaging, and can compel people to act?

This workshop goes back to the basics of storytelling with the goal of helping participants create stronger, more compelling stories. Participants will learn methods of structuring stories to maximize emotional impact and engage their audience. We will also discuss basic legal rights and restrictions that all citizen journalists should know.

This workshop will be interactive, including opportunities to practice fleshing out stories. Participants are highly encouraged to ask questions from our expert presenters.

---

"What Makes a Good Story?" will be held from 6-8pm on Thursday, December 8, at 21 Progress in Seattle's International District (409 Maynard Ave S #202, 98104). Food will be provided.

About the Series Presenter:

With over 40 years of experience in storytelling, producing, directing, and editing, Matt Chan is a pro. He knows what works, what doesn't, and how to articulate what works and what doesn't. Matt's distinguished career includes producing and directing at KING-TV, serving as the Director of Programming and Production at KXTV in Sacramento, producing four nationally syndicated series, and founded Screaming Flea Productions, which has produced programming for more than sixteen networks worldwide. Matt now lends his skills to helping local nonprofits build compelling stories around their work through video. He hopes to share his experience with young people who will carry on telling our stories and advocating for our communities.
