Dal Niente Proximity Series: Enno Poppe
Ensemble Dal Niente welcomes Enno Poppe to Chicago to work with the ensemble for the first time as guest conductor and program curator for the ensembles Proximity series. Poppes highly original style, marrying strange, organic, and microtonal language with a classical sense of development, has made him a Dal Niente favorite. As critic Paul Griffiths put it: Poppe writes music that is at once natural and weird, as perhaps nature is. His Salz (Salt) has become one of the most beloved pieces in Dal Nientes repertoire: the ensemble has performed it nine times since 2011.

Anchoring the program will be North American Premieres of Poppes Stoff for ensemble and Michael Pelzels ...sentiers tortueux (crooked paths), the latter of which calls for a number of auxiliary instruments and micro-tuned pianos seldom heard in person. Soloists Katie Schoepflin (clarinet) and Winston Choi (piano) will perform two other cornerstone works by Poppe - his Holz for solo clarinet & ensemble and Theme with 840 Variations for solo piano. The program will also include the contemplative trio Vermillion by recent collaborator Rebecca Saunders.

Enno Poppe - Stoff (2016) for flute, oboe, clarinet, french horn, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello (North American Premiere)

Enno Poppe - Holz (2000) for solo clarinet, flute, saxophone, keyboard, percussion, violin, viola, cello

Enno Poppe - Theme with 840 Variations (1997) for solo piano

Michael Pelzel - ...sentiers tortueux... (2007) for flute, oboe, clarinet, piano, micro-tuned piano, percussion, violin, viola, cello (North American Premiere)

Rebecca Saunders - Vermilion (2003) for clarinet, cello, electric guitar
