The Barber of Seville
Boheme Opera NJ presents a semi-staging of Rossini's well-known hilarious comic opera "The Barber of Seville". The company is making its stage debut in the Cherry Hill area on Saturday, February 4, 7pm at Cherry Hill West High School, 2101 Chapel Ave, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002, featuring a world-class cast headed by Cherry Hill resident soprano Sungji Kim.  Members of the Boheme Opera Orchestra and Men's Chorus join the cast on stage under the baton of Boheme Artistic Director Joseph Pucciatti.  The production is directed by Howard Zogott.

If you have never experienced live comic opera, this is the event you don't want to miss. Few Italian operatic comedies rival The Barber in popularity. It has been performed in every operatic locale since its premiere in 1816. Its tunes have been adapted for every conceivable musical and media genre, and its wit, timing and invention admired by every composer from Beethoven to Richard Strauss and for that matter, by every audience as well. The opera is in two acts, lasting approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes with one 15-minute intermission. This production will be sung in English so that you enjoy every nuance and hysterical turn of events.

The story of "The Barber of Seville" is based on the Beaumarchais play of the same name. In 18th century Seville, Spain, at the house Dr. Bartolo, he keeps his niece Rosina confined in his house. He is her guardian. Rosina has inherited a great deal of money from her parents. Bartolo will attempt to get both the beautiful girl and extensive inheritance by getting her to marry him. However, as the opera unfolds, there are characters who will plot to upset his selfish plans with ultimate success: Count Almaviva, who falls in love with Rosina; Bartolo's barber Figaro, who devises plans to get them together; and Don Basilio, an innocent pawn they all use to implement their final scheme. The opera is a brilliant piece of writing, causing constant laughter along the way.

Boheme Opera's young cast will sweep you off your feet with amazing vocal acrobatics. Rising star Sungji Kim will sing the demanding role of Rosina. With numerous performances in Japan, Korea, Germany, Canada and throughout the United States, Ms. Kim is a much sought after artist with a repertoire ranging from Renaissance and Early Music, to contemporary pieces written specifically for her unique musical gifts. She is joined by international baritone Jose Adan Perez as the conniving Figaro. A native of Mazatian, Mexico, Mr. Perez made his New York debut with City Opera as Belcore in "The Elixir of Love" and his European debut at the Theatre Basel, Switzerland as the lead baritone of the zarzuela "Pasion".

In the role of the equally conspiring Count Almaviva is tenor Kyle Erdos-Knapp. This talented young artist has been heard throughout the United States in various leading roles in opera, operetta, musical theater, as well as in contemporary and experimental works , with such companies as Hawaii Opera Theatre, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Opera Colorado, Pensacola Opera and Lyric Unlimited, a division of Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Rounding out the cast are baritone Stefanos Koroneos as Dr. Bartolo and bass Paul An as Don Basilio. A veteran artist who has performed a great deal abroad as well as throughout the United States, Mr. Koroneos is known for his comedic skills, having appeared at the Rossini Opera Festival and extensively in Italy, including La Scala, Parma, Rome and Pisa, among others. Mr. An is an ensemble member at the Metropolitan Opera, having previously served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army while soloist of the Soldiers' Chorus of the United States Field Band where he performed for many dignitaries, including all of the living Presidents of the United States.

Boheme Opera NJ is in its 28th consecutive season. The company began as a grass-roots, traditional company, reflecting the passions of its co-founders, Joseph and Sandra Pucciatti, and their initial team of friends and colleagues. Boheme quickly developed a reputation for excellence in reaching out to those who shared a desire for quality, integrity and commitment to the amazing opera genre. Boheme Opera is now the longest standing year-round professional opera production company in New Jersey. In addition to its main stage presentations at various venues in Central New Jersey, it now touts a growing schedule of outreach endeavors in adult communities, senior centers, libraries and outdoor venues in Mercer, Middlesex and Bucks Counties. Boheme Opera NJ associates with several of Manhattan's well-known management agencies to identify emerging artists for performance opportunities.
