Grand Tasting: Exploring Cabernet Sauvignon
The Grand Tasting - An evening of excellent wines from proprietor Jerry Eisterhold's private cellar. December 1st we feature vintage Cabernet Sauvignon from Bob Egelhoff, Pahlmeyer and other producers located in the Pritchard Hill subregion of Napa Valley, served alongside our award-winning TerraVox Norton, accompanied by light nosh.
----
The Grand Tasting might be Kansas Citys best value in wine enjoyment, so book your tickets today. We pour no fewer than eight wines, many from older vintages, in courses paired with delicious small plates and a well-researched discussion of wine style.

For this edition well bring out some delicious Napa Cabernet Sauvignon made by Bob Egelhoff, and a few otherNapa wines that reflect his trajectory as a winemaker. Bob is something of a big dealDavis educated, he came to Napa during the 1980s when the valley was really taking offmore on that below. Well also be sampling a trio of TerraVox Nortons including our 2012 and 2013 vintages, and a yet to be released bottling from 2015.

It must have beenfascinating to grow up as winemaker in Napa during the '80s. At the time of the 1976 Judgment of ParisNapa had a provincial feeling. A few dozen wineries could be found here and there among prune orchards and horse pastures. But as the new decadedawned, word spread of what could grow there, and the valley began to boom. Robert Parker famously advocated for big, rich, hedonistic winesthe kind that Napa produces so well. Jetsetting Bordeaux enologist Michel Rolland introduced techniques that adapted well to the generous California climate, further cementing Napas reputation as equal to the best winegrowing regions in the world.

In the midst of this, Egelhoff charted a journeymans course with stints at Beckstoffer, Harlan (where he crossed paths with Rolland), Pahlmeyer, all rising stars of the era. His reputation for quality work spread. He was hired by Chappellet, Sherwin and Amizetta. In 1997 Wine Spectator lauded a David Arthur Cabernetmade by Egelhoffas its Wine of the Year.

And what is striking, given Bobs lofty connections, is that he has become more modest as time has gone on. He focusses more on his own Egelhoff and Walton labels, limiting his consulting work to a few clients, mostly in the Pritchard Hill area.

It is Egelhoffs increasingly focussed body of work that makes him a great subject for a Grand Tasting. We encourage you to taste for the pure enjoyment of the wine, but also to join us in identifying the key elements of style that show across different bottlings. That is to say, we will be searching for the typicity of Egelhoff Cab, the specific qualities that make it more than just another Cabernet.

This search for typicity will also very much be on our minds as we taste through the TerraVox Nortons.A versatile and hearty grape, Norton can have the capriciousness of a young personfrom year to year it can make wildly different wines! It is exuberant, joyful and deep, which is exactly why wed like to helpour Norton, through careful and precise effort, to grow in sophistication. We want to give greater purpose to its depth, greater sureness to its joy. Tasting through several vintages allows us (and you!) a chance to identify the qualities we expect to find in future vintages, and to discern the overall balance of characteristics that will suit it best.

Seating is limited. Tickets are $40 per person and are non-refundable but can be transferred.
