How to Maximize Function after Total Knee Arthroplasty
Presenters:

Anil Bhave, PT
Clinical Director Orthopedic Rehabilitation
Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics

Joseph A. Zeni, Jr., PT, PhD
Assistant Professor
Department of Physical Therapy
University of Delaware

CONTINUED EDUCATION CREDITS:
This course has been submitted to the Maryland Board of Physical Therapy Examiners for approval of 7 continuing education hours.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The treatment strategies for patients undergoing a Total Knee Arthroplasty are constantly evolving due to age,
bio-mechanics, pain management, and overall patient expectations. It is extremely important to educate Physical
Therapists on the most effective methods to screen and assess these complex knee patients pre-surgically in
order to help improve their outcomes following this procedure. Anil Bhave and Joseph Zeni's extensive research
and expert knowledge of complex knees provide therapists with detailed information on the advancements of
total knee implants and clinically viable treatment strategies to evaluate and improve function. The course will
also include information on the effective use of modalities for pain management and increased range of motion,
dynamic and static progressive splinting options, and effective patient education methods pre and post surgery to facilitate the best possible outcome over the continuum of care.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify and discuss patho-mechanics of knee joint dysfunction after TKA
2. Discuss dynamic vs. static dysfunction
3. Discuss the role of muscle imbalance and neural consideration for complex knees
4. Describe the causes of muscle and joint contracture and how they implicate clinical treatment
5. Formulate goal based treatment plan guidelines for complex knees
6. Discuss the use and benefits of implementing dynamic and static progressive splinting
7. Discuss the use and benefits of Dry Needling and ASTYM modalities
8. Overview of the long term functional outcomes of algorithm based treatment

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants
