Oakland. 2012. 19 year-old Lúcio is living at a gym in West Oakland, where he trains in capoeira. His mother is on the street. His father isin Brazil. Lúcio depends on his surrogate family for survival, but the community spirit of play at the gym often masks the hidden desperation of the players. As characters experience events leading up to the start of the Black Lives Matter movement, their personal battles for identity are inextricably intertwined with the broader challenges faced by people of color living in 21stcentury America.
