Native Plant Society of New Jersey Fall Conference
Come join us for our annual Fall conference!

The conference opens at 9am for sign in.

We will start at 9:45 with opening remarks from our President, John Black. We have some great speakers lined up this year and we will start at 10am with:

Kim Eierman of EcoBeneficial. She will be presenting, "Dealing With Climate Change in Your Landscape"

Kim Eierman is an Environmental Horticulturist specializing in ecological landscapes and native plants. Based in New York, she teaches at the New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, The Native Plant Center in NY, Rutgers Home Gardeners School and several other institutions.  Kim is an active speaker nationwide on many ecological landscape topics, presenting for industry conferences, "green events," Master Gardener groups, garden clubs, nature centers, Audubon Society chapters, beekeeping groups, and other organizations interested in environmental improvements.  Kim also provides horticultural consulting to homeowners and commercial clients.

At 11:15 we have:
Becky Laboy presenting, "Healthy Soil - at the Root of Your Garden"

Becky Beer Laboy graduated from United States International University with a Master of Arts in Education and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. She holds a Teaching Certificate in New Jersey and California. Her passion for soil, plants, and birds has prompted her to continue her education in pursuit of a higher degree in the biological sciences through Kean University. As an Educator at Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Becky  immersed herself in the holistic approach to nature education and co-authored a book The Kids Guide to Exploring Nature. Becky is an avid birder and leads numerous guided birding trips for Ocean County Parks Department. Currently, Becky serves as the Education & Outreach Specialist with Ocean County Soil Conservation District, and continues to educate all  community members about the importance of healthy soil and best landscape management practices, emphasizing the use of planting natives for the benefit of wildlife and to create a healthier planet, one yard at a time.

We will break for lunch at 12:30 -!:30

We will start our afternoon session with:

Tom Knezick of Pinelands Direct presenting, "Seed Collection - From the Wilds to Your Garden"

Tom Knezick has been life-long employee of Pinelands Nursery and Supply. His parents,Don and Suzanne Knezick, started the nursery in 1983 making Tom an employee since birth. After many years of moving pots, building greenhouses, and numerous child labor law infractions Tom has moved into a bigger role in the nursery; becoming the Production Analyst and Seed Specialist. Tom has recently started a new business venture, Pinelands Direct, which markets Pinelands Nursery plants to an online retail audience.

Our final speaker for the day will be:

Dr Ryan Rebozo presenting, "The State of Plant Protections in New Jersey"

Dr. Ryan Rebozo- Director of Conservation Science, Pinelands Preservation Alliance
Dr. Rebozo joined the Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) in 2015 after completing his Ph.D. in ecology from Drexel University.  Prior to attending Drexel, Dr. Rebozo completed his Bachelors degree at Rutgers University in Ecology and Natural Resources with a minor in Entomology and Economic Zoology.  He is an ecologist with experience conducting research in the Pinelands focused on population ecology, plant animal interactions, radio telemetry, fire ecology, soil ecology, and foraging strategies.  Dr. Rebozo chairs the Partnerships for New Jersey Plant conservation, is a member of the Barnegat Bay Partnership Science and Technical Advisory Committee, and is active on the executive committee of the Philadelphia Botanical club.

We will close our 2016 Fall conference with a discussion on how we should manage rare occurrences of plants in New Jersey.
