Young Peoples Symphony Orchestra (YPSO) of Berkeley kicks off its 80th season with the Fall Concert that will feature guest violinist Mayumi Kanagawa, music director/conductor David Ramadanoff, and 101 young musicians in a program of Verdis overture to his opera La Forza del Destino, Glazunovs Violin Concerto in A minor, Cavaterras The Aquarium from his Monterey Suite and selections from Fallas The Three-Cornered Hat, Suites 1 and 2.
Japanese-American violinist Mayumi Kanagawa (b.1994) began her violin studies at the age of four in Japan. She moved to New York shortly thereafter to study in the Juilliard Pre-College division and then on to Los Angeles at age 12 to study at the Colburn School. She is currently a student of Professor Kolja Blacher at the Hochschule für Musik hanns eisler Berlin.
First prize winner of the 2013 Jascha Heifetz Competition in Vilnius and the 2011 Irving M. Klein Competition in San Francisco, Kanagawa has soloed with many orchestras including the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (Tchaikovsky Concerto), Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Berg Concerto), Kremerata Baltica (Mozart concerto No. 4), Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the Lithuanian National Symphony (Bruch concerto). Kanagawa has participated in major international festivals such as the Verbier Festival Academy, Yellow Barn Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival, and has also been a featured artist on Performance Todays Young Artist Series, with her recordings and interviews broadcast nationally on NPR stations.
YPSO will give the first large orchestra performance of Jeremy Cavaterras (b. 1971 in New York City) The Aquarium, the third movement of his Monterey Suite, a work that Ramadanoff commissioned after hearing a gorgeous song cycle that Cavaterra had composed for chamber ensemble and soprano. Monterey Suite is a tone-picture set inspired by the scenery and history of the Monterey peninsula. Ramadanoff conducted the world premiere of Monterey Suite with the Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra in 2014.
The movement uses a range of musical devicesfluid instrumental textures tinted with percussion, sonorous muted brass choirs, sharp dynamic contrasts, and highly chromatic harmonyto evoke the exotic colors and sinuous movements of the Aquariums denizens in all their enormous variety. The effect is intended to translate into music the sense of awe induced by a tour through the famous aquarium, in which we are permitted, through the thinnest barrier of glass, a secret glimpse into the life of the sea. Its some of the best water music Ive ever heard, says Ramadanoff.
Celebrating his 28th season as Music Director/Conductor, David Ramadanoff conducts 101 YPSO young musicians who range in age from 12 to 18, and hail from 32 Bay Area cities in eight counties.
Founded in Berkeley in 1936, YPSO is the oldest youth orchestra in California and the second oldest in the nation. The 2016-17 season is the 80th season since violinist and conductor Jessica Marcelli founded YSPO at the suggestion of Clarabelle Bell, an amateur harpist and Berkeley resident, who got the idea after hearing a youth orchestra on a trip to Portland, Oregon.
