Hanneke Cassel - CD Release with Mike Block, Christopher Lewis and CJ Neary

Fiddler Hanneke Cassel and her trio (Mike Block on cello and Christopher Lewis on guitar) stop at The Sherwood Center for the Arts on tour in support of her newly-released CD - TRIP TO WALDEN POND!
Hannekes latest release, TRIP TO WALDEN POND, features traditional Scottish and Cape Breton tunes and 17 new tunes composed in the Scottish style.  Produced by Finnish musician Antti Järvelä (FRIGG, JPP, Baltic Crossing), the album features cellist Mike Block, guitarists Keith Murphy and Christopher Lewis, fiddler/violist Jeremy Kittel, and pianist Dave Wiesler.  The album fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton Island with grooves and musical innovations from the Boston Americana scene and Hannekes Texas-style fiddle roots.
"Exuberant and rhythmic, somehow both wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness," says the Boston Globe about Hanneke Cassels playing. Such charismatic fiddling has brought the native Oregonian many honors and awards.  She is the 1997 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion, she holds a Bachelors of Music in Violin Performance from Berklee College of Music, and she has performed and taught across North America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, India, and China.  She creates sounds on the cutting edge of acoustic music, while retaining the integrity and soul of the tradition.
Hannekes trio includes cellist Mike Block (who regularly performs with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble) and guitarist Christopher Lewis.  HAILED BY YO-YO MA as the "ideal musician of the 21st Century", Mike Block is a pioneering multi-style cellist, composer, and educator living in Boston. A graduate of the Juilliard School, Mike is an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music.  Canadian-native Christopher Lewis provides the driving guitar sound in the group. In addition to his work with Hanneke, he has been involved with album production and performance in the Boston indie rock scene.
CJ Neary is 11 years old! He started playing violin at age 5. Since he started talking he was asking for an instrument to play, and would make instruments for himself. With no musical background, his parents tried their best to support CJ in this new world of music. He very quickly surpassed their knowledge and started taking them on a musical journey that never could have been dreamed of. Starting out with Classical, then Texas Style fiddling, then Bluegrass, then Jazz, to Funk music, and now composing, singing, playing piano and guitar too ... his musical knowledge, creativity and love of music has grown at exponential rates. He had played Mozarts Concerto #4 in D Major and won a national fiddle championship by the time he was 6. From there he went on winning two more national titles in Texas Style fiddle and in the Jazz/Swing Competition (age 17 and younger), played at The Grand Ole Opry and had played with musical heavy weights from all over the nation by the time was 10. He is currently working on his first album, and is touring with the Bee Eaters.  CJ is a 5th grader at Pine Ridge Elementary school and loves to play basketball, swim and hang out with family when he isnt playing music. I just want to inspire others to do what they love through playing music.
