Makoto Hirano - Boom Bap Tourism
Award-winning choreographer and rhyme-poet Makoto Hirano takes his thoughtful and humorous performance style and collides it with gritty urban/B-Boy aesthetics, direct address story-telling, and meticulously crafted Scenic and Sound design in his autobiographical solo performance about trying to keep it "real" while trying to keep the show going.
Hirano, a Japanese-American, former-gangbanger-street dancer-turned-U.S. Marine, performs a unique, multi-linear narrative that weaves in and out of past and present and channels some influential artists of his life (Gene Kelly, Bertolt Brecht, and Rakim to name a few). Two characters-a slightly conservative 30-something and the other, a boisterous 8-bit Nintendo-playing teenager-battle for stage time through stories, dances, and theatrical devices that ultimately reveal that "real" is sometimes just a four letter word.
