Emergence Flow Arts/Dance Concert
Emergence has been inspired by this year's Burning Man theme: DaVinci's Workshop. We took this as an opportunity to explore the historical significance of the Renaissance and Enlightenment from several different perspectives.
Mechanization has led us from the roots of industrialization and mass production to the last century's explosion in technology: landing men on the moon and making the world's information ever more accessible while simultaneously exposing workers to the horrors of factory labor and the emergence of weapons of ever greater destructive potential. Pushing back the tide of superstition into the age of reason has also led to a stigma toward traditional remedies and community resource structures, many of which are only now being rediscovered or implemented.
We believe the flow arts are uniquely suited to expressing these very complicated issues because our relationships with the objects around us can be complicated: we form a deep distrust of technology we don't understand while at the same time humanizing objects we have regular contact with, naming our cars or talking to our computers when they don't respond as we expect. Nowhere is the tension between object as extension of human while at the same time completely alien more apparent than in flow arts, where the movement of the props we spin is at once a marriage of intention as well as a constant struggle to produce the patterns and effects we see in our heads.
