Gaelynn Lea
Gaelynn Lea is a musician, singer, songwriter and public speaker who makes music like no one else. The 2016 winner of NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert Contest, Gaelynn is from Duluth, MN. She has been playing violin for over twenty years and actively performing for more than a decade. Her music is "steeped in the deep melodies of great Irish fiddle tunes," yet she and her music are anything but traditional.
Gaelynn Lea was the winner of NPR Music's second-ever Tiny Desk Concert Contest in March 2016. The video entry of her original song Someday Well Linger in the Sun rose to the top of over 6,100 submissions from around the nation, chosen as the unanimous favorite among the contests six judges. The very next week, Gaelynn performed a moving Tiny Desk Concert, at which the shows host Bob Boilen said there was hardly a dry eye.
Gaelynn's speaking engagements center around disability, overcoming challenges, and the joy of music. Gaelynn has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bones Disease. In recent years, she has used her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.
Gaelynn has played alongside many notable musicians over the years, including Charlie Parr, Billy McLaughlin, and Alan Sparhawk of the band Low. Her most active collaboration is The Murder of Crows, an atmospheric alternative duo with Sparhawk. Their original song When We Were Young was featured on the Sundance Channels acclaimed drama Rectify." Gaelynn also performs solo sets of experimental fiddle tunes sprinkled with her original songs; her aim is to create a meditative, layered sound that allows the listeners mind to drift.
Her latest EP, "The Songs We Sing Along the Way," was released in August 2016, less than a year after the release of her debut solo album, All the Roads that Lead Us Home.
