Dances of the Silk Road
Dances of the Silk Road

Join Hannah Romanowsky as she presents dances from Central and Western Asia, and learn about culture along the legendary Silk Road. The Silk Road was actually a vast network of trade routes that extended from China and India to Europe and the Middle East, and was responsible for the transmission not only of silk, spices, and other precious goods, but of art, culture, and religion among these great civilizations. The dance traditions from  modern-day Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Iran reflect these cultural exchanges, as well as Central Asias own rich history.

This evening of edutainment will feature dance by ethno-choreologist Hannah Romanowsky accompanied by the Romanza Dance Ensemble, as well as multi-media presentations highlighting the rich history of Central and Western Asia, and an informal talk and opportunity for Q&A.

Refreshments will be included.

ARTIST BIO: Hannah Romanowsky is a performing artist, dance educator, and ethno-choreologist from the San Francisco bay area specializing in Middle-Eastern and Central Asian dance. With over 30 years of experience in world dance traditions, Hannah draws her aesthetic impulse from both Eastern and Western classical, popular, and folkloric traditions.  An internationally recognized specialist in her field, Hannah has performed and taught master classes throughout Asia, Europe, and North America.  She is on faculty at the Afsaneh Dance Academy where she was trained in Persian dance under the tutelage of Sharlyn Sawyer, and continues to perform frequently for Iranian and Afghan communities throughout the Bay Area.  Hannah was first introduced to cultural dance from the Near East at age 20 through folklorist Katarina Burda and Aywah! Ethnic Dance Company. These formative experiences started her on a lifelong journey rich in beauty, art, culture, and dance. She is pleased to share what she loves with you tonight.

Hannah holds degrees in Dance Ethnology and World Music from San Francisco State University, and East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies.  She is Founding Director of the DanceVersity multicultural youth arts education program, teaches weekly classes in San Rafael and Berkeley, and travels for workshop intensives and performances.
