Music for the Contemplation of Outer Space - Glenale College Planetarium Concert Series
Baroque composers often tried to capture the timeless, placeless qualities which characterize the higher spheres of the heavens. This was done sometimes by invoking celestial Christian figures like the Virgin Mary, represented by the hexachord: the six notes of the scale often called the scala celestis, the stairway to heaven. It was done also by invoking the attributes of the planets and their corresponding deities from the ancient religions of Greece and Rome. The program is made up of both techniques, and a few more, used by the most ethereal composers of the 17th and 18th centuries: Sweelinck, Fischer, Weckmann, Froberger, and Buxtehude.
