Create your very own garden oasis by using Permaculture Design principles
Permaculture Design integrates the study of natural systems, native knowledge and appropriate technologies for designing human systems which reflect a care of people on the earth, and into the future. It integrates best practices of agriculture, horticulture, ecology, alternative energy, community design and green building strategies among other sustainable approaches.
In this comprehensive course students will learn about the local ecology as well as how the history of Pittsburgh has formed our landscapes and impacts our gardens. Students will learn basic techniques in analyzing their environment and have step by step guidance through the Permaculture Design Process. Proper planting techniques will be covered as students plant a small garden area. They will learn about useful plants to include in their own yards, those that attract beneficial insects, increase nitrogen in the soil and act as weed control. In addition, students will see local examples of permaculture in action and work on a permaculture design with other students.
