Join Gradey Proctor for this series of classes with an in-depth look at everything a new mushroomer needs to know -- plus plenty of useful insights for experienced mushroom lovers.
On our first excursion we will seek out the major genera of fungi in the Pacific Northwest, walking through the forest while we talk about mushroom anatomy, forest ecology, and how fungi make a living. Our second trip will focus on gathering edibles in the wild as we explore fungal ecology: finding the right place to start our search, learning how to navigate with map and compass, covering mushroom-foraging safety, and more. With a little luck, participants will return with tasty specimens to enjoy at home.
For our last Sunday, we will be in the kitchen preserving, cooking, and dining on our fungal finds. We'll also explore gardening with mushrooms and spend time discussing and preparing medicinal mushrooms. Participants will leave with a shiitake log and a medicinal preparation to take home. Plus, you will expand your wild food skills and develop a better understanding of the ecological impact of fungi in the forest, garden, and human health systems.
Mushrooms: From the Forest to the Home meets October 2, October 16, and October 23 from 10am-5pm. Class is a total of 21 hours and costs $250, with a sliding scale available. Registration required by September 28.
