Ojai Film Society presents: Born to be Blue
Ethan Hawke turns in a engrossing performance as the legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. Were introduced at a difficult time in his career, just before having his teeth knocked out as a consequence of his drug addiction.
Playing his muse, lover, wife and mother to his child, Carmen Ejojo has an honest chemistry with Hawke that keeps us engaged in the story of this flawed genius, with her care and concern for the struggles of his roller-coaster career. Their love story becomes the heart of the film thanks to Ejojos charming performance.
Rather than a traditional biographic take on Baker, inventor of the West Coast Swing, Robert Budreau's Born to Be Blue is an inventive, sometimes surreal experience in film, showing the talented, but vulnerable, musician at his worst and best. According to Brian Tallerico, writing for rogerebert.com, This is a movie about a junkie who often succumbed to his addictions, but its not a dark descent into hell. It takes a lot of time for hope, joy, music and love.
