Drum Battle at the Van Dyck
Drum Battle at the Van Dyck Schenectady, NY October 8, 2016 8PM
Drummer Michael Benedict is bringing the Drum Battle Back to the Van Dyck! First presented in 2013, this event is modeled after the Gretsch Drum Nights at Birdland in NYC in the 1950s and 60s. Perhaps the most famous of these was in 1960 that featured Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Charlie Persip and Elvin Jones. The concept was to show off these great drummers in pairs with a jazz combo. They would trade solos and play behind one another. This gave the audience a chance to hear these drummers in a different context compared to the normal setting in which there is only one drummer in a jazz group. The closing would feature a drum battle between the four drummers.
The Musicians are:
DRUMS & PERCUSSION Michael Benedict Pete Sweeney Bob Halek Mark Foster Brian Melick
With Special Guests Keith Pray-Alto Saxophone Jon LeRoy-Organ
