(UK, 2916) Directed by Rufus Norris. Based on the musical by Bertoldt Brecht and Kurt Weill, an adaptation of John Gay's The Beggars' Opera. Cast: Rory Kinnear, Rosalie Craig, Hayden Gwynn.
Mack the Knife is back in town, in a darkly comic new take on Brecht and Weill's raucous 'play with music,', broadcast live (and in an encore ) from the stage of the National Theatre! It is fair to say that more people know the song Mack the Knife than the 1928 musical it came from, a Bertoldt Brecht and Kurt Weill masterpiece that equates capitalism with criminality. In a bold new production by Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), London scrubs up for the coronation while thieves are on the make, harlots are working overtime, and the police are busy taking bribes. Things are looking up for beggars Mr and Mrs Peachum, until the sinister, charismatic Macheath turns up, and their daughter Polly (Rosalie Craig) disappears... "A snarling, sexy beast of a show." Four stars Alice Saville, The Independent UK. Running Time: 2 hours 40 mins inc 20 min intermission

Grimy, filthy and tremendously fun. Time Out
Enjoyably raucous. Kinnears really on song in this enticingly sleazy revival. Evening Standard
