19th Annual National Black United Front Sankofa Caravan to the Ancestors
October 14 - 15 in Houston TX, the National Black United Front (NBUF) will commence its 19th Annual Sankofa Caravan to the Ancestors. The Sankofa Caravan to the Ancestors is an interfaith ancestral commemoration that has three key areas:
To offer praise and thanksgiving to the creator and our revered African ancestors;
To educate our community on African spirituality, history and culture
To invoke blessings for our community in all worthy endeavors.
Activities begin with the Sankofa Caravan to the Ancestors Edition of the NBUF Black Arts Movement on Friday October 14, 6 p.m. at the historic S.H.A.P.E. (Self Help for African People Through Education) Community Center. Abiodun Oyewole of the legendary spoken word collective The Last Poets will be the feature of the nights activities. A veteran of the arts community, Abiodun began doing spoken word to honor Malcolm X in 1968. After producing 13 albums, the Last Poets continue to inspire the next generation of artists. One such artist is Sunni Patterson.
Sunni Paterson will be the keynote speaker and the featured performer at the Sankofa Caravan to the Ancestors Luncheon, taking place Saturday October 15, 1 p.m. at Old Cultural Center in Galveston TX. Sunni Patterson is an internationally recognized spoken word artist that has been featured on Def Poetry Jam, Democracy Now and BET's Lyric Café.
