Then And Now, Again: A Workers' Opera
First Unitarian Church
St. Louis, MO
Share this event:

Saint Louis has a rich, mostly unexplored, labor history. And there is history in the making again today as fast food workers, home health care workers, childcare workers, university adjuncts, call center workers hotel workers and lawn care workers begin to find their voice; all of this in the face of the political push in Missouri for so-called right to work legislation in the private and public sectors. Ferguson, too, has made it increasingly clear that workers engaged in these organizing efforts understand clearly the connection between workers rights and civil rights in this post-industrial society growing up around us.

To honor these efforts, Bread & Roses Missouri is producing a workers opera to connect the then with the now.

The Bread & Roses Missouri production of Then and Now, Again, directed by Agnes Wilcox and Freeman Word, will open on Friday evening, September 23, 2016, in the Community Room at the First Unitarian Church, 5007 Waterman Blvd., St. Louis, Missouri.  There will be an additional performance on Saturday, September 24th and a matinee performance on Sunday, September 25th.  Evening performances will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the matinee at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are good for any of the show's three performances.

This show continues the rich local tradition of celebrating social justice and solidarity with the arts. This production follows Voices of Solidarity, a 2008 theater performance featuring stories about organizing and bargaining campaigns, which Bread and Roses produced while still a project with St. Louis Jobs With Justice. Since then, Bread and Roses has emerged as an independent non-profit arts organization providing an arts and humanities lens for artists and community activists committed to protecting the basic human rights of all people and who understand that art can be a powerful instrument for social change.
