Something Inside Is Broken
How do you tell the story about the shattering of a people? With truth, honor, music, and a little comic relief. Something Inside is Broken tells the story of the Nisenan tribe of Northern California during John Sutters reign in the Sacramento Valley. The musical recounts the events of 1846 during Polk's Manifest Destiny doctrine.
It has been described as a historical, groundbreaking, visionary event. It is presented in the Nisenan language and in English, as well as through music, satire and some hip hop dancing.
"Were retelling the history that was left out of the school history books," said Jack Kohler of On Native Ground, a media, film and public relations company, and co-creator of the show. "We knew that music was the way to tell this story."
Kohler, who is from the Hoopa tribe, also wrote most of the songs and is directing the show.
"This is not the vision of Sutter that was taught to us in the school, but one that the natives had to endure and survive," he said.
Alan Wallace is co-creator and a native Nisenan storyteller. He translated the songs and script into the Nisenan language.
Wallace learned the language from his great-grandmother, Lizzie Enos, and from books and other materials created from her voice recordings, some of which can be found in the California Language Archive.
J Ross Parelli is a musician, dance teacher and co-founder and program director at Beats Lyrics Leaders. "This is a world class musical art form with a brilliant cast singing and acting out the original drama, she said. The cast is composed of local and national professional singers, actors and artists from across the United States."
This is a show you'll want to see before it hits Broadway!
