Perseid String Quartet Presents: Leipzig 1843, An Evening with the Schumanns
Robert Schumann - String Quartet in a minor Clara Schumann - Two Songs Robert Schumann - Piano Quintet
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a concert in the 19th century, when "classical" music was still brand new? Join us for a special evening of chamber music as we recreate a concert program first presented in Leipzig in 1843 by Robert and Clara Schumann. We begin with Robert Schumann's String Quartet No. 1 in a minor, which gives a nod to the quartet tradition of Beethoven and Haydn while employing the new tonal and emotional palette of Schumann. Following will be a set of short songs written by Clara Schumann, presented for the first time in arrangement for viola and piano. We are joined by guest pianist Diana Umali to perform Robert Schumann's extroverted and exuberant Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, to bring the evening to a stunning conclusion.
Joining us will be guest speaker Alexander Stefaniak, Assistant Professor of Musicology and author of "Schumann's Virtuosity" (Indiana University Press, 2016). Prof. Stefaniak will explore both the music and the famous Schumann partnership. This concert, in fact, marked a turning point in both Roberts and Clara's careers and helped make them a nineteenth-century musical power couple.
