The Mountain Music Project
Documentary.  57 min.  2009
Director: Jacob Penchansky
With: Buddihiman Gandharba, Danny Knicely, Tara Linhardt

Follows two Virginia musicians, who travel to Nepal to explore the extraordinary connections between Appalachian and Himalayan folk music.  View that trailer at http://mountainmusicproject.com/film/.

Two traditional musicians from the hills of Virginia take you to the villages of rugged Nepal, where you discover the amazing similarities between Appalachian and Himalayan folk musicand the eerily parallel heritage that gave birth to them both. This vivid portrayal of endangered music and culture celebrates remarkable instruments, foot-tapping sounds, and the people who create them. -- Jonathan B. Tourtellot, National Geographic Fellow; Founding Director, Center for Sustainable Destinations; Geotourism Editor, National Geographic Traveler

What they did in that film would not be possible for a lot of people. You dont get that kind of response from people when you just go interview them. They lived with and jammed with the musicians as a musician. There is no better way to do it! -- Curtis Burch, Grammy award winning musician and one of the founding members of the legendary and pioneering bluegrass band New Grass Revival.

The Corndrinkers

For 40 years, the Corndrinkers have been breathing new life into the fiddle tunes, heart songs and parlour music of the Southern mountain stringbands from the Golden Age of country music, the 1920s and 1930s. Inspired by the tunes of such country music pioneers as the Carter Family, the Skillet Lickers, Uncle Dave Macon, Charlie Poole, the Delmore Brothers and many others, the Corndrinkers have played festivals and dances throughout the Appalachian region of the US, including the Carter Fold, Cityfolk, the Appalachian Festival, Gambier Folk Festival, the High Mountain Hay Fever Festival and many more. They have been regular guests on WYSO Public Radio and have been a summertime tradition playing and calling the barn dances at Carriage Hill MetroPark in Dayton Ohio for four decades.

The band is still made up of the five original members since 1976, fiddler Barb Kuhns who was awarded the first place old time fiddler championship at Galax Va. in 2002, fiddler and multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, Linda Scutt, Doug Smith playing guitar and dobro (and champion lariat artist ), the driving clawhammer banjo of Tom Duffee, and Al Turnbull on the upright bass.  The Corndrinkers have recorded two CDs, The Corndrinkers & Corndrinkers Still.
