NYC trio Consider the Source defy easy description. If intergalactic beings of pure energy, after initiation into an order of whirling dervishes, built some kind of pan-dimensional booty-shaking engine, powered by psychedelics and abstract math, itd probably just sound like a CTS tribute band. Drawing from progressive rock, fusion and jazz, with alien sounds soaked in Indian and Middle Eastern styles, CTS blends disparate parts into a striking, utterly original whole. Dubbed Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Fusion, the bands music strikes a rare balance between cerebral and emotional, intellectual and primal. A relentless touring schedule has won the band a fervent following from California to Israel, with fans ranging from jam-band hippies and jazz cats to corpse-painted headbangers and prog geeks.
Formed in 2004, Consider the Source features Gabriel Marin on fretless double-neck guitar, bassist John Ferrara, and drummer/percussionist Jeff Mann. Called the guiding light for his generation of six-stringers, Marin channels the mystical fury of McLaughlin and Coltrane into wailing melodies, kaleidoscopic soundscapes and boneshaking riffs. With a background in classical musics both Eurpoean and Indian, and an instinct for avant-jazz and destructive metal, Marins hypnotic fusion of styles is ever unpredictable. Ferraras propulsive, percussive attack, equally suited to simple grooves and impossible chords, can ground the music or launch it into space. His madcap gumbo of slap bass, Indian rhythms, earthy minimalism and complex tapping constantly pushes into strange new worlds, whilst still dropping thick booty-clap beats. Underneath them lies Manns rolling thunder; dense rhythmic architecture built from pure swagger and bounce. Half double-bass prog-metal, half crackle-pop Buddy Rich swing, with African and Balkan swirls, Manns muscular, freewheeling polyrhythms are the engine fuel for Considers multiversal mischief. Even when not improvising, Considers music is always a conversation, a roiling stew of dynamic interplay. Each member of Consider the Source alternately leads and follows, spars and assists; in any single song, alliances are made and broken, bargains struck and divorces finalized.
Touring from coast to coast, as well as Europe and the Middle East, has not only earned the band thousands of fans, but has allowed them to perform with a wide variety of well-known artists, including Victor Wooten, Wayne Krantz, King Crimson Projekt, Kris Myers (Umphreys McGee), Wyclef Jean, Andy Statman, Matt Darriau (Paradox Trio), Oteil Burbridge, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Dumpstaphunk, Keller Williams, George Porter, Jr., Jeff Sipe, Panzerballet (Germany), Eatliz (Israel), Freak Kitchen (Sweden), Morglbl (France), and many others. They have performed at numerous festivals and events, including Burning Man, Gathering of the Vibes, the NYC Fretless Guitar Festival, Catskill Chill, Sun Seekers Ball (Canada), Aura Music & Arts Festival (Florida), Jazz Fest (New Orleans), Head For The Hills Festival & SXSW (Texas), Rootwire (Ohio), and the NYC Gypsy Festival. STARGOYLE:
Formed in the Summer of 2015, when long starving guitarist, song-writer and singer, William Baxter, was sought out by talented and dedicated bass player Adam Z. Anderson. A dedicated drummer was the final piece needed and was found in Matt Vande Vyver, the rhythm section was further solidified with the addition of talented producer Eric Green. Having already opened and or shared the stage with acts such as Particle and Frogleg,and guitarist Will Baxter also has had the fortune of sharing time on stage with Jeremy Garrett (the Infamous Stringdusters) and Jaik Willis. Stargoyle have been dedicated to the music, and they are well on there way to building a reputation of funky jams, and cerebral lyrics.
This unlikely combination has led them on a whirlwind journey from moment one. Not many bands have their first show at a festival, but then again not many bands carry the swagger and mysteriousness of Stargoyle. In their case, this is exactly what happened, as they had their debut performance with a day set at the Ifdakamp festival, and since then have taken the Wisconsin scene by storm.
Combining styles is the bands mantra, one song may be an instrumental electronica influenced number, and the next song could be jangly Americana influenced tune. That being said, the band specializes in a form of high energy music they have labeled the "Intergalactic Space Funk" a combination of electronic music elements and old school R&B that is led by the rock solid bass of Adam Z, with the addition of Baxter's "Guitar 2.0" a unique device that allows him to operate various instruments without ever having to put down the pick.
Although the band has been around only for a moment in an ocean of experienced and seasoned acts, they are not new to the musical world. In fact, Will and Matt used to gig together in different bands as early as 2002, being members of Photontox and Tetra respectively. Not to be outdone, Adam Z Anderson has been a long-time player, and enjoys snapping photos for Madison House, when he is not playing with the rest of the guys, and has had his work featured in Nashville Weekly magizine. Jon Herschberger has been in the music business for almost 20 years, and plays not only percussion, but on occasion also can add a touch of guitar to the bands jams.
Even stranger, is the mystery surrounding the bands music, the hidden meanings behind the songs, beneath the virtuosic chops of Baxters guitar, the thundering Bass of Adam Z, the rock steady rhythm of Matt Vande Vyver & Jon Herschberger, lies a hidden world. One of Robots, Emus, and a mysterious benefactor named the Chinaman, what is Stargoyle? Only those who have seen them truly know.
