Empower Burmese Girls With Education
Join Educational Empowerment at Wing Luke Museum on Thursday evening, 5:30 pm, September 22nd for a memorable evening of Burmese cuisine, culture, and inspiring words from Khet Mar. A renowned Burmese journalist, Khet Mar will share her views of Myanmar's path to economic and social transformation after 50 years of isolation under an oppressive military regime.
Khet Mar writes about the true lives of ordinary people and the situation in Myanmar, a country isolated from the world for 50 years. In addition to her writing, Khet Mar is a community developer and environmental activist.
From 2009 to 2012 Khet Mar was writer-in-residence at City of Asylum in Pittsburgh, which provides sanctuary to writers exiled under threat of severe persecution in their native countries. In 2016 Khet Mar translated I Am Malala for Educational Empowerment for publication and distribution to teenage girls in Myanmar. Khet Mar currently works for Radio Free Asia in Washington, D.C.
Khet Mar is passionate about her country, human rights, and the power of education. Her experiences living under military dictatorship, where rights were abused and books were censored, forced her to seek asylum in the U.S. Her message is enlightening and inspirational.
Myanmar is a country rich in art, natural resources, and amazing women and girls eager to connect to today's world, to succeed, and to achieve their dreams.
Learn more about Myanmar while enjoying the beauty of Wing Luke Museum, savoring a 3-course Burmese meal catered by Project Feast, and sipping wine and a traditional Burmese non-alcoholic beverage.
