Suzanne Schmid
If hard-pressed to come up with a label for her music, singer-songwriter Suzanne Schmid will quickly define it as folk-rock. "That's easier for people to digest, I guess. It's clear from my sound that my obvious influences were the female artists of the 80s and 90s, such as Natalie Merchant, Tracy Chapman and Suzanne Vega". But Schmid, who was born in the Caribbean (Jamaica), raised in Upstate, NY in the 80s, and educated at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia in the early 90s, quickly clarifies that her time in North Carolina (mostly in the town of Carrboro since the mid-90s) has left an indelible mark on her musical sensibilities. "While Vega, Prince, Natalie, Paul Simon, and Tracy's music formed the soundtrack of my teen and young adult years, I've been continuously influenced by the music around me. The diverse North Carolina song-scape has introduced me to styles such as old-time, bluegrass, and country, which have colored my songwriting.  I think this is evident in the music I play, listen to, and the local musicians I choose to surround myself with."

The Field Hand, Suzanne Schmid's debut CD, is a foray into folk, old-time, roots, reggae, and light rock. Most of the songs on the album, with the exception of Mother and Child Reunion by Paul Simon (the only cover on the CD), were written between 2012 and 2015 under the guidance of local teacher and guitarist, Eric Haugen (currently of The Outboards, Fake Swedish, and frequent guest guitarist for former Chapel Hill, NC band, Birds and Arrows), and award-winning singer-songwriter, teacher, and Piedmont Blues artist, Jon Shain (http://www.jonshain.com), the producer and main guitarist for the project. Despite the diverse genres, Schmid's debut CD can be summed up as a series of relationship stories --stories detailing mainly the pitfalls of love. The title track, peppered with reggae undertones and a distinctive Klezmer-esque fiddle part ably played by The Old Ceremony's/Onyx Club Boys' Gabriel Pelli, is the story of a Caribbean woman whose Irish field hand lover leaves her and their child to sail back to his family in Galway. The reggae-rock mix, Why are you Crying, is an interventional song about breaking the ties of a failed marriage and letting go. I'm Sorry, with its country-sounding 2-beat strum pattern, is a fun apology for crushing on someone you have no business falling for. Schmid covers it all, even the taboo topic of adultery in Playing with Fire. "I'd like to say that while I am none of the characters in my songs, there's a little bit of Suzanne Schmid in every one of these characters!" But not all of the songs on The Field Hand are about failed or perilous love relationships. Love Me is a tender duet between Schmid and singer-songwriter Barry Gray of Graymatter, a family-group from Burlington, NC. The song, Round and Round, features two-time International Bluegrass Music Award winner and Prairie Home Companion regular, Joe Newberry (http://joenewberry.me/wordpress/), and harkens the listener back to the 1930s, the Dust Bowl, and a tense relationship with nature.
