Aging Without Children Conference
This conference is intended for people of all ages who want to have a say in how they age.
10 -11:30: "Growing Older Without Kids" with Liz Taylor, Aging Deliberately
Adult children and spouses are called our insurance policy in old age because they'll step in and get us the right services when we become frail. What do you do if you don't have any? Your spouse might die before you, or you're divorced or never married. So who's going to protect your interests when you can't? This session offers no magic formula, but it will help you think about the issues in new ways and get you on a path to find your own answers.
12:15 -1:45: "Cohousing 101" with Grace Kim, principal architect at Schemata Workshop, past-Cohousing US board member, and founding member of Capitol Hill Urban Cohousing
Adults without children may have few, if any, family members to provide company and care as they become older. The health risks that can result from such isolation are many, including increased risk of cognitive decline, depression, and mortality. Despite this, the number of adults who wish to remain in their homes as they age is also growing. Cohousing is an innovative way to help alleviate the health risks of isolation, while also allowing adults to age in place within a supportive community. This session will focus on the basic legal, financial, and social aspects of cohousing and how to get started.
2:00 -3:00: Debrief/Discussion with Teresa Tam, Senior Health Care Analyst
