LIBERTY ROOTS PRESENTS: THE RETURN OF HELLBOUND GLORY
Four of the hottest underground 'outlaw' country bands on one bill: Hellbound Glory, Sean K. Preston and the Loaded Pistols, Mickey and the Snake Oil Boys, and Jimmy Swope Trio
*************** HELLBOUND GLORY *************** Barreling through the gates of country music, HELLBOUND GLORY, is justifying rightful ownership to the bands declarative namesake. Distilled of equal parts melody and bar-room-thump, this Reno, NV based band is packing the house to a growing legion of fans coast to coast. Founding front man and songwriter, Leroy Virgil, explains; We just really dig the challenge of a new audience. Im not a flashy guy but I like showing off.
************************************ SEAN K. PRESTON & THE LOADED PISTOLS ************************************ Sean K. Preston doesn't get gussied up for the show...he wears his cowboy hat, dirty jeans and shitkicker boots everyday. If it sounds like he sings about hard luck, lost love, long journeys, dark secrets, damnation and redemption like he's lived through them...it's because he damn well has. He's quick with the wise cracks and bantering with the audience between songs...but when the next song starts you better believe he'll be sweating blood to deliver the best performance. It's blues, punk, country, and rock'n'roll.
The music of Sean K. Preston draws heavily on the influences of the classic heartbroken sounds of Country & Western music from the 40s through the 70s, the honesty of the Blues by the likes of Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker, the bombast of 50s RocknRoll, the lyrical sophistication of musical poets like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Nick Cave, the raw energy of Punk and the spirituality of Mountain Gospel. His own songs range from delicate laments and lullabies to fiery sermons and confessions.
*************************** MICKEY & THE SNAKE OIL BOYS *************************** Started in 2011 by Mickey (formerly of Rustbelt Homewreckers, Down the Hatch & Skull Cap) in a small town in Kentucky....his music is steeped in Honky Tonk .... covered in Bluegrass and is rough around the edges.
**************** JIMMY SWOPE TRIO **************** If any modern day album defines raw unadulterated pure country music it has to be this tremendous debut by Jimmy Swope. The songs are excellent as are the arrangements and playing, with the sound including plenty of twang and steel guitar but Jimmys raw, expressive vocals are what hardens the music and gives it a believable edginess. Every song, including the Kris Kristofferson cover, is excellent but "The Wolf" is a lengthy and extraordinary epic murder/suicde ballad. A tremendous album that is a million miles above some of the characterless music often dished up as country music
