Medieval Ballads and Runes
Medieval Ballads and Runes We will perform The Mountain King, a story told in Medieval Ballad about a mythical being of Scandinavian legend who allures a certain young woman into his underworld, a story that parallels the Ancient Greek Myth of Persephone. In the second set we will perform more medieval and traditional ballads from Scandinavia, Europe, The U.S. and beyond. Here is a quote from a review of the newly released Mountain King album, that was also nominated by New Mexico Music Awards for Best Vocal Performance:
"What to praise first? Johannas lovely alto and her storytelling skill? Scotts evocative guitars? Their arrangements that mold ancient melodies to modern ears? The performances have a stylized, almost ritual quality, as the Hongell-Darsees summon ancient characters from the depths of our collective unconscious and bid you take leave of the modern world and join your ancestors, huddled together in a hut around a fire as the storyteller makes the hair on your arms stand straight up." (Mel Minter, Musically Speaking, Albuquerque, NM)
Scott and Johanna Hongell-Darsee (USA/Finland) research, edit, translate, adapt and arrange traditional melodies and lyrics from Scandinavia, British Isles, Europe, India, and North America and perform them in their own unique way. Both modern and traditional instruments are used. In May 2014 they presented The Mountain King at Greenwich Village's Historic Provincetown Playhouse where it was described by a NYU student as "...delightfully magical and eerily contemplative." Mel Minter, of Albuquerque the Magazine, wrote in 2014's "Roaming the Collective Unconscious in Songs Centuries Old": "Live or recorded, the old songs tug at the nether regions of the brain, stirring up wonder, fear, and perhaps most disconcerting or comforting, recognition." Johanna (vocals, woodwinds, research, translation, arrangements) was born in Finland. Apart from music she has a background in theater and dance. She studied theater in France and Bharata Natyam dance in India. She has worked as a performing artist for over 30 years in Scandinavia, Europe, India and USA. Scott (stringed instruments, arrangements, composer) was born in USA. Before relocating to New Mexico, he spent 16 years in Europe, where parallel to his artistic work he worked as a therapist at ballet companies such as Dance Theatre of Harlem, London Festival Ballet, English National Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet and Hamburg Ballet, and also taught at Danish State School of Modern Dance.
