What is a Food Desert? As you may know, a Food Desert is typically known as a geographic area where residents lack proximity or access to healthy, fresh, affordable food choices. These areas are often low-income and may also be home to a disproportionate number of fast-food or other less-healthy food choice venues. Why is it important? A significant number of Solano residents live in food deserts and/or areas where its difficult to get or afford fresh, healthy food. We have fewer grocery stores, higher poverty rates, a greater proportion of fast food outlets and lower numbers of parks and recreation areas than many Bay Area counties. This lack of access to fresh, healthy food is linked to poor health outcomes (such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic problems) that compromise the quality of life for residents and result in increased costs for social and health services as well as lower productivity and overall community prosperity. What can we do about it? Many county, nonprofit and community partners have been working to address these issues for some time, and are now coming together to create an event that will both benefit county residents living in food desert and help set a policy agenda for reducing or eliminating food deserts altogether in Solano County.
